Kenyan artist Willy Paul has transitioned from a gospel to a secular singer and is now selling liquor. Is his musical dream ending?
Many expected that after a spat with Diamond Platnumz, he would match up and become a megastar! The Kenyan artist who had the balls to send Diamond back to Tanzania…
His follow-up concert promoted by known celebrities and leaders such as Eric Omondi, Governor Sakaja and CS Joho did not meet the expectation.
In addition, he was embroiled in an eleventh hour venue cancelation from the strategic KICC to a joint along Mombasa Rd, which cut off a section of his potential fans from attending.
After the fiasco with Diamond, his music releases too, did not get the expected traction.
Instead of musical tours locally and globally, he has now ventured into liquor store business and put an advert on his socials with job offers.
Willy Paul, the Gospel Star
Willy Paul kicked off his musical career in 2010 in gospel thanks to his runaway hit dubbed “Rabuka”.
With a touch of Swahili akin to Bongo Flava, Willy Paul’s star shone brighter with the release of his chart-topping hit “Sitolia” a collaborative effort with Gloria Muliro.
“Sitolia” delved on his life struggles and his firm belief that God had finally rescued him from the dungeons of poverty.
His other follow up songs included “Kitanzi”, “Mpenzi”, “You Never Know” and “Lala Salama” just to mention but a few.

His debut album “You Never Know” was launched in 2013 at the KICC and was well attended with the creme dela creme of gospel stars.
The album cemented his space as a gospel powerhouse winning several accolades and also touring the world.

Willy Paul ditches Gospel for Secular music
However, before long, he ditched gospel music citing a toxic environment.
According to Willy Paul, he was struggling to move out of the ghetto with the same people in gospel music impeding his run.
His songs were termed more secular than gospel prompting his eventual shift.
After crossing over to secular music, he continued making inroads gaining prominence with both regional and international collaborations like “Njiwa” with Nandy and “I Do” with Jamaican songstress Alaine just to mention but a few.
With controversy being his second name, Willy Paul further traveled this road with women ruining his reputation from his numerous scandals thus his nickname “Bwana Mkunaji”.
Nonetheless, the biggest controversy that came calling was his spat with Bongo Flava crooner Diamond Platnumz at the Furaha Fest in Nairobi last year which saw the latter refusing to perform.
Thereafter, Willy Paul affirmed that he was better than the Wasafi president if offered support. The moment gave birth to his now infamous Swahili tagline “Walai mkinipatia support nitafika huko juu” which he has also used while promoting his liquor joint.
The Saldido president rekindled his bromance with fellow singer, Bahati and his wife, Diana with whom they weren’t seeing eye to eye which led to the birth of their double collaborations “Keki” and “Paah”.
However, the release of the two songs got tongues wagging with many affirming that they were below par and he needed to source for good song writers.
The same sentiments were also shared when he dropped his collaborative piece with Innos’B dubbed “Bingiri” recently. Talk of repeating the same lines over and over and that’s it.
Some quarters argued that Pozze acted wise to survive Innos B’s flame not to mention his cultic following.
