TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Magic is a part of cultures around the world. The art of illusion has been delighting and transfixing audiences for centuries. There’s a special place in Fulton County where you can learn more about it.
The Magic Corner is a spellbinding building in downtown Wauseon. It’s home to a museum, a magic shop and a theater all under one roof.
“I have two doctorates. A PhD in clinical psychology and a doctorate in magic,” Dr. Kenneth Ladd, the man behind the illusions said.
Dr. Ladd loves sharing his talents and his vast collection of magic history with everyone.
“It brings happiness to people who may otherwise be having a bad day. anybody can do magic if they take the time to learn it,” Dr. Ladd said.
After perfecting his sleight of hand over the course of decades, Dr. Ladd does have favorites.
“Card tricks are a dime a dozen. There are hundreds of them, so I don’t do them. I prefer stage magic with some of the big illusions,” Dr. Ladd said
The love of magic runs deep in the family. Dr. Ladd’s 14-year-old great grandson Aiden Franz-Donato is the youngest member of the family to have something up his sleeve.
“The best part of magic is probably the reactions during the show. They look on people’s faces when they’re trying to figure out how did they do that?” Franz-Donato said.
The museum is full of all kinds of tools of the trade, many of them connected to world-famous magicians. You’ll see names like Houdini, Siegfried and Roy, Harry Blackstone and an Ohio magician named McDonald Birch who used a real pony in one of his signature illusions.
