GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Students at Green Bay schools may see a larger police presence Thursday after a social media threat reappeared.
The school district said it was alerted Thursday morning to a threat that first circulated a year ago and appeared again on Snapchat Wednesday night.
The district said the threat mentions Green Bay schools but no school in particular and “refers to a revolution using language that is not typical to our local area.”
The police department tells Action 2 News the threat to a “Green Bay area public school” is from February 2023.
Officers don’t know how it’s circulating again but they don’t think the threat is credible. They’re increasing their presence around schools “in an abundance of caution.”
The district is reminding students and parents to report anything suspicious they see or hear, and asks families to talk with students about the importance of sharing information with an adult.
“We also encourage you to speak with your children about the serious nature of making threats, whether verbally, written or on social media. All threats are investigated by administrators in collaboration with the GBPD. Students who make threats, even in jest, are subject to very serious consequences.”
Suspicious or threatening activity can be reported to the state’s Speak Up/Speak Out hotline at 1-800-697-8761, Crime Stoppers at 920-432-7867, or by using the P3 Tips mobile app.
