USC women’s basketball experienced a worst-case scenario Monday during the Trojans’ second-round game vs. Mississippi State in the women’s NCAA Tournament.
Star sophomore guard JuJu Watkins, on the short list for the best player in all of women’s college basketball, went down with a season-ending knee injury on a fast break in the first quarter. She was bumped by a Mississippi State defender en route down the floor and immediately crumpled to the court, grimacing in pain as she clutched her right knee.
After she was tended to by USC trainers for several moments, she was picked up off the court and carried into the tunnel opposite the Trojans’ locker room.
Considering her standing in the sport of women’s basketball β she is one of the sport’s best players and one of its brightest stars, at a time it is rising rapidly in popularity β her exit from the game naturally elicited an outpouring of responses from across the sports world.
