Julia Michaels and Maren Morris Team Up For Infectious New Collaboration, ‘Scissors’

Julia Michaels and Maren Morris have joined forces for their second collaboration, ‘Scissors’, which follows their 2024 link-up, ‘cut!’, taken from Morris’ Intermission EP.

‘Scissors’ is set to drop on Friday, January 10th, and will be accompanied by a music video. The forthcoming collaboration explores a bright, R&B feel, with Julia Michaels and Maren Morris trading lyrics across an infectious, beat-driven instrumental.

Although the titles of Julia Michaels and Maren Morris’ two collaborations – ‘cut!’ and ‘Scissors’ – seem linked at first glance, judging by the snippets the duo have been sharing, it appears the songs are distinct, with ‘cut!’ exploring Morris’ feelings of having to put on a show and act like everything is fine, while ‘Scissors’ finds Michaels and Morris brushing off any concerns regarding an impending break-up.

Across the uptempo, energising backing, Julia Michaels and Maren Morris playfully reassure their soon-to-be-exes that they won’t be missed, “You wanna say goodbye? I’m not crying rivers / If you wanna cut ties, I’ll get the scissors baby / I don’t mind, I’m not even bitter / If you wanna cut ties, I’ll get the scissors baby”.

Julia Michaels and Maren Morris have been teasing ‘Scissors’ for a number of weeks, but thankfully, we now have an official release date, with the high-profile duet expected to serve as the latest single from Michaels’ keenly awaited sophomore album.

‘Scissors’ follows the popular ‘Heaven II’, which dropped in November 2024, and continues the Iowa singer-songwriter’s strong bond with country music, with Michaels collaborating with the likes of Josh Ross, Jordan Davis and Keith Urban in recent years.

Despite hailing from the world of country, Maren Morris began distancing herself from the genre in 2023, with the ‘Bones’ hitmaker exploring a more pop-leaning sound of late.

Following her Intermission EP, which arrived back in August, the ‘My Church’ crooner has released a smattering of singles, including October’s ‘People Still Show Up’, with fans eagerly looking forward to Maren Morris’ long-teased debut pop album.
