Singer Kailash Kher slams music reality shows.
Singer Kailash Kher has heavily criticised music-based reality shows, claiming they are commercialised spectacles that “have nothing to do with music.” The singer’s comments were made during his session at the Jaipur Literature Festival titled Teri Deewani: Shabdon Ke Paar, where he spoke alongside publisher Vaishali Mathur. The conversation veered toward the growing influence of talent shows on television, prompting the singer to share why he distanced himself from judging such shows.
When asked about his absence as a judge in recent years, Kher responded, “These reality shows are marketed as music reality shows, and big names like you sponsor them.” Highlighting the superficial nature of the industry, he added, “They are only filmy music reality shows. Music se unka koi lena dena hai hi nahi. 2% jo bhel puri bech rahe hai in the name of film music woh usko promote karte hai.”

Kher’s dissatisfaction with the format comes despite his stint as a judge on Indian Idol 4 in 2009, alongside Javed Akhtar, Anu Malik, and Sonali Bendre. He also made guest appearances on other popular shows, including Saregamapa Li’l Champs, Mission Ustaad, and Rock On. However, he has not taken up a judging role for nearly 15 years.
The singer’s remarks come months after fellow artist Sunidhi Chauhan expressed similar concerns about the lack of authenticity in music-based reality shows. Chauhan had pointed out that producers often focus on drama rather than genuine talent, shifting attention away from musical excellence.
Kher, one of India’s most celebrated folk and playback singers, rose to fame with Allah Ke Bande in 2003, following a successful run singing jingles for commercials. Over the years, he has carved a niche in both the Bollywood and independent music scenes, founding his band Kailasa and earning widespread acclaim for his soulful compositions and unique vocal style.
