Katy Hessel debuts “Museums Without Men” audio series to commemorate Women’s History Month.

Art historian and The Story of Art Without Men author Katy Hessel has launched Museums Without Men, a new series of audio guides designed to spotlight work by women and gender nonconforming artists held in public museum collections.

The series, coinciding with Women’s History Month, debuted with guides for five museums, which can be experienced either in the galleries or online. Hessel’s guide for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco launched on March 1st, and will be followed by guides for The Metropolitan Museum of Art (March 8th), The Hepworth Wakefield (March 19th), the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (March 22nd), and Tate Britain (March 25th). The series will highlight artists including Bisa Butler, Mary Cassatt, Rosa Bonheur, and Leonora Carrington.

“I am thrilled to be working with institutions to spotlight women artists in their collections,” Hessel said in a press statement. “While the gender imbalance is still acutely visible—an issue many institutions are working on rectifying—I hope this project will help focus attention on the works by women that already exist in collections worldwide. My wish is to introduce new and existing museum visitors, of all backgrounds, to artists they may not be familiar with and to shed light on great works in all art forms.”

Museums Without Men will expand with future guides planned for other institutions, including the Belvedere Museum in Vienna. This ongoing project builds on Hessel’s previous work with The Great Women Artists Podcast and her book, The Story of Art Without Men, to elevate the visibility of female artists in public collections and encourage a more inclusive approach to curating art.
