The global pop star performed for an estimated 2.5 million fans in Rio de Janeiro
Last night (Sat, May 3rd), Lady Gaga delivered a historic free concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Copacabana Beach. There were an estimated 2.5 million people in attendance, with fans flying in from all over the world for this once-in-a-lifetime event. Gaga now holds the record for the highest attended concert by a female artist in history
The performance followed Gaga’s recent headlining performances at Coachella and sold-out stadium shows in Mexico City. Next, she’ll head to Singapore before kicking off The Mayhem Ball tour across North America, Europe, the UK and Australia this summer and fall.
Brazilian police confirm two people were arrested for being involved in a plot to bomb the event by a group inciting hate speech against the LBGTQ community. The Associated Press reports that local law enforcement and the Justice Ministry thwarted the attack after enlisting teenagers online to use Molotov cocktails and improvised explosive to carry out the attacks.
The Mayhem Ball Tour is in support of her eighth studio album, Mayhem, which received widespread acclaim from critics and fans upon release and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking Gaga’s seventh consecutive No. 1 album. Due to overwhelming global demand, the global superstar added 13 new dates—all of which proceeded to sell out at on-sale in a powerful reflection of her bond with fans.
The album features “Die With a Smile,” Gaga’s collaboration with Bruno Mars, which has broken many records after securing a 14th week at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 chart. Now tied for the second-longest running No. 1 in Billboard Global 200 chart history, the song has also spent over 165 days at No. 1 on the Spotify global chart.
Mayhem marks a return to Gaga’s pop roots, reaffirming that she is a master of reinvention, crafting an album that is as bold and eclectic as it is deeply personal. A declaration of artistic freedom, it embraces the fractured pieces of oneself and how they come together to form something unexpected and beautiful. The album mirrors this concept with its diverse sonic palette and thematic layers, combining elements of chaos, defiance, and vulnerability into a cohesive artistic statement.
