LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– The Lansing Art Gallery and Education announced it is temporarily closing until the end of Sept. to “reevaluate financials.”
According to a news release, the board of directors has suspended operations to focus on reorganizing exhibits and educational programs after a decrease in donations, sponsorships, grants, and attendance.
“Not only has there been a decrease in funding, but many of our artists have expressed a decrease in sales at other galleries and storefronts they partner with,” said the release.

Lay-offs and budget cuts came after former executive director Michelle Carlson resigned earlier this month. The art gallery says the cuts were necessary to allow the board to “thoughtfully reflect on the mission, engage with our artists and community, and strategically develop a succession plan that fits the needs of all constituents of the Lansing Art Gallery.”
The gallery is offering community members to attend a focus group on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 5:30 p.m. at the Lansing Art Gallery and Education Center.
