Billboard launched Latin Women in Music — or Mujeres Latinas en la Música — in 2023 as a response to an exploding Latin music business that crossed borders and continents but was united in language and repertoire.
Revenue from Latin music, defined as music made predominantly in Spanish, went from just 5.6% of total recorded-music revenue in the United States in 2021 to nearly 8% by midyear 2024, according to the RIAA — a huge leap. Latin music is the fastest-growing genre in the country, according to the RIAA and Luminate, and for the third year in a row, Latin music revenue in the United States will exceed $1 billion.
Touring has exploded, too, with Latin outings accounting for 16% of 2024’s top 100 touring grosses in the country, according to Billboard Boxscore. It’s a significant increase from previous years.
Not surprisingly, the presence and impact of women in Latin music has also grown, to levels and positions unimaginable even a decade ago. Women now hold the most senior positions in every sector of the Latin music industry, from major labels to streaming services, and women managers helm the careers of some of the genre’s most successful artists, including Shakira, Karol G and Anitta.
Understanding that Latin music is part of the industry as a whole, and yet holds its own distinct place within it by virtue of language and geography, Billboard has long shined a spotlight on Latin music and its executives. Our annual Billboard Latin Women in Music gala and executives list is part of that ongoing, expanding effort.
In 2025, for the first time since its inception in 2023, the Latin Women in Music executives list runs concurrently with the Women in Music executives list. As a result, both lists include different Latin industry leaders, reflecting a particularly broad and diverse marketplace that includes many countries. However, while the two lists share some companies, executives cannot be on both lists.
The Latin Women in Music list comprises only 45 executives whose purview is singularly Latin or Latin American-focused, whether they are based in the United States or abroad, and whose work has a significant impact on the U.S. Latin market. On April 24, the Mujeres Latinas en la Música gala will again air on the Telemundo network, honoring remarkable artists who have made an impact in the past year and beyond. We are proud to continue supporting the growth and accomplishments of women in Latin music. —LEILA COBO
