Included in the show is a new self-portrait which is priced at £500,000, plus VAT, but none of the other exhibits are for sale.
In addition, dealer Offer Waterman, has announced a solo exhibition of Auerbach’s London views in his gallery next to Sotheby’s, in conjunction with Christie’s former head of contemporary art, Francis Outred.
Outred sees this more as a curatorial exercise than a selling one, like a follow up to the Royal Academy’s 2022 Francis Bacon exhibition, Man and Beast, which he organised. Here, he has focused on the best quality examples available from museums and private collections.
Although none will be for sale, Outred acknowledges that the exercise could also be strategic in terms of attracting business. A non-selling exhibition may not make money from sales, but it could attract new clients.
However, all three dealers have been outflanked this month by Bonhams, which has two Auerbach portrait paintings for sale on October 10 and 11.
One is of the journalist, David Landau (£300,000-£500,000), and the other a portrait of the art curator Catherine Lampert (£450,000-£650,000).
