Mastering the Art of Selling at the University of Montana

Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) – When it comes to business, becoming a good salesperson is a big part of attaining success in your field.

UM Director of Strategic Communications Dave Kuntz told me on Wednesday, that being able to effectively convince a potential client to purchase your product is a vital skill.

UM School of Business Features ‘The Spin’ in Sales

“It’s been a big area of emphasis here at the University of Montana, not just to provide our students with the education that they need, the broad education to have a successful career and a fulfilling life, but also to ensure that our students are leaving campus with those technical skills that are needed in the workplace,” began Kuntz. “One of the things that the College of Business here at the University of Montana has done a great job of doing is building those specific skills within their curriculum.”

Kuntz said in business, it’s all about ‘the spin’.

“The program is called the SPIN Selling technique, and it’s a scientifically proven method that prioritizes the skills needed for salespeople to be able to make a sale on the job”, he said. “This class has been built into the College of Business curriculum. Our students are taking it and really leaving our campus with those skills that they need to thrive in the workplace.”

A Huge Part of Business Success Comes Through Eye-to-Eye Contact

Kuntz said meeting the client eye to eye with an effective message to share with your potential customer or client is an essential skill for anyone in business.

“It’s a course that’s part of the College of Business curriculum, and it’s an in-person, face-to-face course that we offer here, and it really prioritizes,” he said. “We recruit students in there who are looking for careers in sales, people like financial advisors and commercial lenders and professional service firms to really make sure that as students are leaving UM and interviewing for those jobs in our community and beyond that, they have those skills needed to succeed.”

Kuntz Said The College of Business is Wrapping up a Successful Semester

Kuntz said UM is proud of its prowess in their School of Business.

“I’ll add that the College of Business is wrapping up a really successful semester,” he said. “We’re once again, the number one college of business in the Big Sky Conference, and as recent data, about 94 percent of our students who graduate from the College of Business have a job in their career field six months after graduation. So this college has been thriving, and this is just another way that it’s going to continue to meet the needs of Montana’s business leaders.”
