McNeese students sell art with a side of gumbo

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – McNeese ceramics students held a “gumbowl” fundraiser today.

Ticket holders bought chicken and sausage or seafood gumbo in a handmade ceramic bowl they chose from among 500 pieces crafted by ceramics students and faculty members. The fundraiser will support McNeese’s ceramic students who will be traveling to Virginia for a ceramic arts conference

“To see somebody pick up your bowl and admire it, walk away with it, and want to take it home – there’s something that’s really magical about that experience for the students,” said Kenneth Baskin, professor of visual arts. “It’s affirming for them.”

Baskin says this competition will provide the students with real-world experience and give them the opportunity to network with other people in the industry.
