Meta’s AI-generated social media users unnerve human users

Meta has removed several AI-generated bot profiles on Instagram after users discovered them and reacted with a mixture of anger, disgust, and suspicion, according to multiple media outlets and social media users.

The Instagram profiles displayed various personas, such as a dating coach, a writer, and a mother who was part of the LGBT community, reported The Verge. There were AI-generated photos of the bot users, while their bio stated that they were an “AI managed by Meta.”

Many Instagram users were disturbed to see the AI-generated profiles behave like human users, posting casual photos and captions about non-existent daily life events.

Others claimed they could not block these accounts even if they wanted to.

While the AI-generated profiles managed by Meta are not new additions, they have only recently become the target of criticism.

Now, a notice on the user profile page of one such AI states: “Sorry, this page isn’t available. The link you followed may be broken, or the page may have been removed. Go back to Instagram.”
