CHICO — Female artists are being celebrated at the Museum of Northern California Art.
Sculptor Belinda Hanson and painter Carol Jenkins are sharing their work, and the other gallery at monca is chock full of Women Artists from the permanent collection.
Hanson’s and Jenkins’ exhibition, called “Vivid Visions: Exploring Place in the Far Reaches of Northern California,” runs until July 6.
“Monca is thrilled to be highlighting and honoring the art of women in this current exhibition by not only featuring the paintings and sculptures of Belinda Hanson and Carol Jenkins but also presenting many of the women artists in our permanent collection,” said monca Executive Director Pat Macias.
Hanson and Jenkins share a love for nature. The open spaces of Siskiyou County influence their artwork in different ways.
Hanson’s sculptures and sculptural installations display her sense of humor and freedom with materials and space engages the viewer in a relationship with her work, according to the monca website. Jenkins uses reflected light, organic shapes and layers of fluid paint and creates landscapes.
Hanson pursued her passion, which was art, and got a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and a Masters in Fine Arts in sculpture. Her artwork highlights her surroundings in the natural world, particularly Siskiyou County and the American River running near Carmichael in Sacramento County. Hanson’s work has been shown in numerous galleries and museums including the Pence Gallery in Davis and the Siskiyou Arts Museum in Dunsmuir. She has taught at various colleges and universities.
“Carol and I have shown together three times now and enjoy the process of mingling our very different styles. I have been exclusively a sculptor for the last 14 years but recently am revisiting paint,” Hanson said in an email. “I work on location and then collage and paint in the studio.”
Hanson said her current work came during the COVID-19 pandemic and has morphed since then.
“I was having dreams of flight, and reading books by Carl Rovelli on time. These have equal influence on these works,” Hanson said.
Jenkins has studied with artists such as Jenny Nelson, Nick Wilton and Alice Sheridon. Her work has appeared in exhibitions at the Montclair Gallery in Oakland and the Liberty Arts Gallery in Yreka. She focuses on experimentation. Nature is reflected in her art practice. Jenkins also publishes a monthly newsletter meditating on the creative process.
“My paintings are abstract and process driven, yet somehow express the joy I feel in wild terrain. It is the vast diversity of the visual world that moves me: a jagged peak, the splash of color in an open field, layers of transparent paint. They all amaze!” said Jenkins.
