Although popularised at the beginning of the 21st century, social networks emerged at the end of the 20th century. Their popular impact has been enormous and has substantially modified the habits of the world’s population in a phenomenon that has so altered our habits that it even has a specific day: 30 June.

In this article we are going to discover which are the most used social networks today, as well as some interesting facts about those in which Telefónica is present.

Most used social networks

In a world in which more than 5,000 million people have accounts on social networks, a number that continues to grow: specifically by 5.6% with respect to 2023, 266 million people.

The five most used social networks in the world in 2024, according to Digital 2024 are:

  • Facebook, with 3,049 million users.
  • YouTube, with 2.491 billion users.
  • WhatsApp, with 2 billion users.
  • Instagram, with an identical figure to the previous one.
  • TikTok, with 1,562 million users.

An order that changes if we consider which is the favourite network of each user. In this case, the most highly rated are:

  • Instagram, the favourite for 16.5% of the population.
  • WhatsApp, chosen by 16.1%.
  • Facebook and Wechat for 12.8%.
  • TikTok for 7.4%.

Telefónica’s social networks

Telefónica has almost three million followers on social networks on its corporate profiles, to which should be added the millions of accounts of a different nature, such as the commercial accounts of different brands (such as Movistar, O2 or Vivo).

Having activity on different networks with different focuses also achieves the objective of reaching a varied and heterogeneous audience.

LinkedIn

With 1.2 million followers, Telefónica’s LinkedIn profile offers information related to both the company and the latest in technology in a variety of formats.

From videos to polls to live conversations (the latest being a chat with our ESG Director, Elena Valderrábano), the company’s large community of LinkedIn followers is kept constantly informed.

Facebook

With almost a million likes and followers, Telefónica’s Facebook profile offers posts on a variety of topics.

Technological news, curiosities and areas of knowledge of the company’s employees or information related to specific days for a social network that offers daily updated information.

X

Telefónica’s account on X has more than 100,000 followers, covering events, reporting news and giving priority to audiovisual content in a year that was undoubtedly marked by the company’s centenary, as it could not be otherwise.

Another feature of the profile on the social network formerly known as Twitter is the high level of interaction with other accounts undoubtedly linked to current affairs, whether they are different profiles also linked to the operator or even from different sponsors.

Instagram

As in the previous case, Telefónica’s Instagram profile is marked by the latest information related to the different fields in which the company operates.

The audiovisual proposal offered to its almost seventy thousand followers alternates between curiosities, information or technological tips, although it is true that, not being an exception, the activity in recent months is especially focused on the first hundred years of the operator’s existence.

TikTok

With a more unbridled profile, Telefónica’s corporate channel on TikTok has accumulated more than 310,000 followers and two million likes.

Having gone viral since its beginnings to explain technology-related topics such as what 5G is or through humour, it has managed to carve out a niche for itself on this Chinese social network born in 2016.

YouTube

Telefónica’s YouTube channel has more than 40,000 subscribers to whom it offers different types of audiovisual products, from shorts to live events, such as presentations of results or the Shareholders’ Meeting.

The channel has different lists with different thematic series dedicated to various topics such as the company’s centenary, the latest technological trends or the interesting reflections of Mejor Conectados, with different types of protagonists such as Rafa Nadal, Pau Gasol, Iñaki Gabilondo or Brianeitor.

The almost 1,800 videos uploaded over the years on this channel have accumulated more than 50 million views.
