Munson’s Art Market: Great for Holiday Shopping and Boosting Art Students’ Visibility

UTICA, N.Y. — As Munson celebrates the holiday season, they have teamed up with their affiliate art school to offer a unique shopping experience to the community.

The first-ever Munson Art Market launched on Thursday at noon and will be open until 7 p.m.

The museum in downtown Utica is also hosting a festive open house featuring horse-drawn carriage rides, hot chocolate, and cookies from 5 to 7 p.m.

The art market displays a diverse range of artisanal products created by Pratt Munson students, faculty, and community education participants.

Pratt Munson serves as the extension branch of Pratt Institute, based in Brooklyn.

The initiative for the art show originated from students attending classes at the art college in Utica, who presented their idea to the new dean of Pratt Munson, Suzanne Snyder.

“They wanted a chance to bring the Munson community together,” Snyder said of the students.

“For the students, it gives them a chance to show their work, but it also gives them a chance to articulate what it’s about, what their goals are, and what they’re hoping for to do,” the dean added.

The market offers local artists, including students from the art school, valuable exposure just in time for the holidays.

“And it allows them to start thinking about how they’ll market themselves in two years when they graduate,” Snyder said. “A lot of our students will end up being independent artists or designers, and they really need the chance to hone in their skills on presenting their work.

The market will continue on Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Root Court of the museum.

If you’re eager to embrace the holiday spirit, Munson Museum of Art offers traditions that fits easily into any schedule.
