Native Elements Art Festival + Market Celebrates Indigenous Artists

This May is a month of many firsts for Indigenous events. One of them, the inaugural Native Elements Art Festival + Market, takes place during Memorial Day weekend at the Santa Fe Botanical Garden starting Wednesday, May 21, and running through May 26. The event benefits Native artists, the Institute of American Indian Arts Scholarship Fund, the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women, and the Santa Fe Botanical Garden.

The festival and market celebrate not only the artistic contributions of Native peoples but also of their Native lands and plants; the event replaces the long-running Native Treasures Art Market that took place over Memorial Day weekend at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center and was organized by the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture.

As part of that event, MIAC also named a Living Treasure; the outgoing and final MIAC Living Treasure was fashion designer Patricia Michaels of Taos Pueblo, who had an exhibition at the museum and closed this year’s SWAIA Native Fashion Week.
