Neither Instagram nor TikTok: Gen Z’s plan to revive this social network everyone thought was dead

Gen Z has spoken, and this time it’s not through filters or viral dances. It’s through GIFs, chaos, and an endless wall of personal posts straight out of 2014. Yes, we’re talking about Tumblr, the social network many thought was dead, now experiencing an unexpected renaissance thanks to Gen Z.

For over a decade, Tumblr was the quirky, cozy corner of the internet, dominated by American Apparel hoodies, cryptic Helvetica quotes, black-and-white photos of cigarettes, and playlists titled “to cry at 3am.” But with the rise of Instagram, the popularity of TikTok, and the monetization of every click, Tumblr faded into millennial nostalgia.

A new golden age for Tumblr?

Not anymore. According to recent data reported by Fast Company, Gen Z now makes up 50% of Tumblr’s monthly active users and 60% of new registrations. The reason is clear: many young people are tired of opaque algorithms, prefab influencers, and an internet designed to sell.

In January, during the threat of a TikTok ban in the U.S. and the temporary shutdown of X (formerly Twitter) in Brazil, thousands of users found refuge in Tumblr. They began organizing specific communities to archive their favorite TikToks and share content at their own pace, free from the constant judgment of likes.

Tumblr’s evolution

Far from being stuck in the past, Tumblr has evolved. In December, it introduced Communities, a Reddit-style feature allowing users to gather based on their interests. In January, it launched Tumblr TV, a mix of GIF search engine and short video feed, with the platform’s signature chaotic charm.

Tumblr’s greatest strength is that it doesn’t try to compete with today’s giants. That’s precisely its advantage: it doesn’t want to be like the others. There’s no pressure, no posturing, no obsession with virality. Aesthetics, personal expression, and authenticity take precedence over algorithms.

In an era of hyper-optimized content, Tumblr has become the digital refuge for those who just want to be themselves—with a bit of drama, lots of glitter, and tons of memes. Who would have thought the “fast-paced generation” would resurrect the most beautifully chaotic social network of all?
