Bali has confirmed that it is building a new art market in the village of Bongkasa. The new art market will be as impressive and jam-packed with cultural wonders as the Ubud Art Market and is being developed to help promote lesser-visited regions of the island and showcase the best of the province’s artistic and cultural heritage.

To most tourists, Bongkasa Pertiwi Village sounds like it may be way off the beaten path, but in actual fact, the emerging tourism destination is hidden in plain sight.

Sitting just north of central Ubud, one village north of Sayan, Bonkasa Pertiwi Village is already home to some of Ubud’s most popular tourist activity centers. Bongkasa Pertiwi Village is home to a series of ATV and river rafting companies that have their adventure starting points placed along the village’s main street.

From these low-key headquarters, tourists hop aboard their ATVs or walk down to the fast-flowing Ayung River for their adventures to begin.

Now, Bongkasa Village wants to take its tourism offering to the next level. It is working with the local government to develop a new art market complex worth IDR 4.9 billion. Land clearing and foundation building started in late April 2025, and the construction process is well underway.

Although located just steps from Ubud, which is within Gianyar Regency, Bonkasa Pertiwi Village falls under the jurisdiction of Badung Regency. The Regent of Badung Wayan Adi Arnawa has given the new art market the go-ahead and promised funding.

The new art market building should be completed within 8 months, meaning tourists will be able to enjoy all that the space has to offer in early 2026. Speaking to a reporter, the head of Bongkasa Pertiwi Village, Nyoman Buda, expressed his excitement that this long-standing dream project is now coming to life.

Buda shared “The development of this art market aims to accommodate MSMEs in the village. Moreover, tourism in the village has started to develop.” He added that Bongkasa Village remains committed to promoting the best of Bali’s nature tourism, including ATV experiences, river rafting, and jungle swings. Buda noted “We also have many MSMEs, including honey, coconut oil, handicrafts, and silver. This is what we want to accommodate.”

He confirmed that the art market will be built on 16 acres of community-owned land and feature 14 kiosk areas. The main building is set to be completed in December 2025, with final fixes and vendors moving in in January and February.

Buda thanked Regent Arnawa for his insights and support for the development, noting, “From the input of the Regent, it was observed that there was a lack of parking because the market area was small. Because of budget constraints, it could not be done this year. It is possible that by looking at the developments next year, a basement can be made.”

The Bongkasa Pertiwi Art Market will be open for tourists to visit and explore independently. Buda and his teams are working to create tour packages and travel experiences for tourists that showcase the best of what the community has to offer all in one easy day trip.

Buda shared, “The plan is that every tourism business actor [in the village] will be required to include in package prices [a visit to the] art market. For example, if tourists want to go rafting, maybe the rafting package will be added with a certain amount to enter the art market.”

“Whether the tourists shop or not, that’s their fortune; what’s important is that they visit the market directly.”

While the Bongkasa Pertiwi Art Market remains under construction, tourists visiting Bali can explore the island’s best arts and crafts at the Ubud Art Market which can be found in the very heart of Ubud.

The Ubud Art Market, located on Jalan Raya Ubud, is open seven days a week and is one of the best places on the island to buy souvenirs, jewellery, clothing, handicrafts, and locally produced artwork.
