New gallery in Old Town

The Mitchell Gallery, a new art gallery featuring the work of local artists, will open in Eureka’s Old Town on Saturday. The gallery is located at 425 Snug Alley, next to the gazebo, and will have its grand opening during Arts Alive!, from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday.

“I’m exhibiting the work of a few of my favorite women artists in my opening show,” said Linda Mitchell, the gallery’s owner. “These are all women whose work has inspired me for years. They have diverse, original viewpoints and they’ve lived rich lives pursuing their muses.”

Mitchell is herself a painter and has a long history in the local art community. In the late 1990s, she served on the board of the Redwood Art Association and co-owned the Cody Gallery in Old Town, where she and her husband exhibited the work of many local artists.

In the early 2000s, she established and wrote the North Coast Journal’s Art Beat column, and a few years later she established and co-owned Eureka Studio Arts, a teaching studio and gallery. She also taught an ongoing oil painting class in her studio for over 20 years.

“I didn’t aspire to open another gallery at this time in my life, but I ran across the listing for the space on Craigslist and arranged to see it, just for fun,” Mitchell said. “The space was small but it had beautiful gallery lighting, clean white walls, lovely tile floors and a great Old Town location. It was such a perfect place for a small gallery, I couldn’t resist taking it on.”

Mitchell’s gallery is close to other Old Town galleries, including the Epitome Gallery, the Old Town Art Gallery and the new Schlueter Gallery.

“Opening another art gallery in this section of Old Town will help expand a creative resurgence that’s already happening. There have never been enough exhibition spaces to represent all the art being made in Humboldt, but we’re making progress.”

The artists included in Mitchell’s opening exhibit are Regina Case, Micki Flatmo, Joan Gold, Georgia Long, Dana Mitchell, Natalie Mitchell, Ingrid Nickelsen, Terry Oats, Kathy O’Leary and Rachel Schlueter.

“I signed the lease for the gallery on Feb. 14, and decided to open on March 2, which didn’t give me a lot of time, so the artists I contacted were women I already had relationships with. I’ve spent a lot of time with them over the years, painting, traveling and socializing. I’m eager to share their work and tell the stories of their lives and their creative journeys.”

The Mitchell Gallery will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, contact Linda Mitchell at 707-497-9086 or lindamitchellgallery@gmail.com.
