New social networking App, Afree, excites Nigerians

Nigerians are excited about the launch of Afree, a new digital app for social networking in the country. It is expected to provide easier access to information, services and entertainment, as well as create opportunities for businesses and individuals.

Speaking at the launch, Nigerian partner/representative, Dr. Joshua Orabiyi, stated that the app was a move to revolution-ize social media in Africa with Afree, a unique web plat-form designed to empower Africans by giving them an uncensored voice.

“The platform promises not only to enhance social connectivity but also to provide significant economic opportunities for its users,” he said.

Orabiyi highlighted the platform’s vi-sion to create a unified space for Africans to express them-selves freely, explaining that Afree is about giving every African the op-portunity to speak out and be heard: “We believe that, by join-ing efforts, we can bring about positive change and create a better future for everyone.

Orabiyi added that the app was built by a citizen of Kyrgyzstan, part of the former Soviet Union; he also reiterated the importance of equality in the work place, as the product has a woman on board, Dr. Tope Alakija, a senior lecturer in Yabatech, as part of the team.

Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, represented by Otayemi Oluwaseun, said the initiative shows growth and hope for the youths. The app launch was aimed at promoting entrepreneurship and innovation in the digital technology and creative industries.

‘Government is glad to have such an amazing development and would invest more in digital infrastructure to bridge the digital divide. The environment is not conducive but we are partners in progress. Government needs to create an enabling environment by providing Infrastructures for tech entrepreneurs

“We need to build business incubation and mentorship programmes that can support young entrepreneurs and social change-makers to develop solutions and business models that positively impact their communities.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Alakija spoke on excessive usage of social media and how it affects mental health. She shared her wealth of experience and propagated the new product to become a well-known app in Nigeria.

Ejiro-Oghene Paul, client service lead, Lagos Mind, representing the director of the Mental Health Desk, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Tolu Ajomale, spoke about “Thriving on social media platforms and developing healthy habits.”
