Nintendo Switch X integration, social media friend finding being discontinued

Although the venerable Nintendo Switch is going to be around for a while as the slow burn to its successor system extends its lifespan into 2025, some features are going away much sooner.

Nintendo is removing the ability of Switch players to post directly to X, the social media app formerly known as Twitter, in a change that will also affect how friend requests work on the Nintendo Switch.

Starting with a system update June 10, posting game screenshots and video clips to X/Twitter from the Album in the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu will end.

“While posting screenshots and videos to Facebook will continue to be available, this service may also be discontinued at a later date,” Nintendo said in a statement.

The change also neuters the ability to post Super Smash Bros. Ultimate screenshots from the Album to “Smash World” in the Nintendo Switch Online smart device app.

In Splatoon 3, Nintendo Switch X and Facebook posting will be removed from mailbox posting in Splatsville, Inkopolis Plaza or Inkopolis Square in-game locations. Players can still post without the social media accounts, but images posted by players younger than 13 will not be visible to others. In Splatoon 2, posting to X from the Inkopolis Square mailbox will stop, and user posts in the Square will be replaced by game data.

Finally, a feature allowing social media friend requests via the Friend Suggestions menu on My Page in the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu will no longer be available. Nintendo says the friend suggestions feature will continue on smart devices, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, which ended other online software features earlier this year.

While some speculate the changes are due to X owner Elon Musk’s decision to restrict or monetize X integration with other services, others point out that the integration wasn’t seeing widespread use anyway and it’s a no-brainer cost reduction. Nintendo was mum on the reasons for the change.
