Outages affecting Facebook, Instagram reported

(Gray News) – An apparent global outage has affected some of the tech company Meta’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Threads.

The most common issue affecting Facebook users had been an inability to log in to their accounts. Many reported being logged out and unable to log back in. As of 11:45 a.m. EST, some users reported they were able to access their Facebook again with little problems.

The outages were first reported on DownDetector at about 10:30 a.m. EST Tuesday. At its peak, about 519,988 users nationwide reported experiencing issues with Facebook. As of 11:35 a.m. there were about 56,107 reports. About 75% of the reports are about login issues.

Instagram was also affected by the apparent outages with many Instagram users reporting issues with their feed not refreshing.

These issues are apparently widespread, with countries such as the U.K., Japan and Brazil reporting problems, suggesting the outages could be global.

Meta released a statement, saying that they are aware of the issue and that their engineering teams were “actively looking to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.” As of 11:55 a.m. EST, the company reported they are currently “recovering” from the outage and apologized for any inconvenience.

At this time, the cause of the outages is unknown.

The Associated Press reported a London-based internet monitoring firm called Netblocks said there was no sign of “country-level internet disruptions or filtering,” which they say are typically imposed by governments.
