The Perth Advertising and Design Club (PADC) has announced a new Artist in Residence program in partnership with North Metropolitan TAFE. The residency will culminate in the creation of the artwork that will adorn this year’s coveted PADC Gold Skull trophy — a symbol of excellence, craft, and commercial creativity in Western Australia.
Last year’s skull was redesigned in partnership with TAFE with the aim to create new artwork year-on-year. Sculpted by product designer, Eric Schneider, it was brought to life with hand-painted artwork by designer and artist, Kevin Wilson. Inspired by the beauty of aiming for the stars, it is a symbol of creative connection, shared wonder, and the spirit of community. It was featured in the documentary produced by SupaFlr and Co-Directed by Mauro Palmieri and Jhaz Bullen-Williams.
“Within our industry, we often talk about the importance of craft — the artistry and detail that underpins every great idea,” said Dan Agostino, PADC Co-President. “This collaboration helps bring that philosophy to life, spotlighting the artists who help shape our creative future.”
Last year’s collaboration highlighted the depth of talent on offer in WA across product design, fabrication and visual arts, and underscores the importance of nurturing these skills. For the Club, it’s a way to invest in talent, create industry pathways, and celebrate the diverse skills that make our creative community so vibrant.
“We’re incredibly grateful for TAFE’s support,” says Agostino. “Overseeing the making of last year’s Gold Skull was a genuine artistic process — from its initial concept to the end result. It’s a powerful reminder of how much creative potential exists right here in our community with every lucky recipient of the award taking away a hand-crafted and uniquely individual piece as artistic as their gold-winning work itself. We’re excited to see this program grow and help more creatively minded people enhance their skills and careers.”
The initiative aims to support creative talent in Western Australia, building stronger connections between education and industry. It offers a unique opportunity for designers, artists and creators to showcase their talent in a real-world, industry-connected project and cement their name in the history of the club as the creator of this year’s Gold Skull award.
