GEORGETOWN, Ky. (WKYT) – While any app on it’s own might not pose a danger, Georgetown Police took to social media themselves to warn parents of 15 apps they believe could be harmful for children, without supervision.
“You don’t see kids out playing anymore. Kids don’t know how to do anything. I mean social media is the devil to me,” said one concerned parent, Eugene Perrin.
As a parent you probably already know about Instagram, Facebook, even Snapchat. But everyday, comes a new app. And there’s some you most likely haven’t even heard of yet.
”Of course they don’t know. I don’t know half these apps that are out. I know a lot of parents don’t know half these apps that are out. I use Facebook for social as far as friends that I know, or business. But of course even then you’ve got to be careful with what you’re doing.”
GPD’s info graphic highlights apps like KIK, a messaging app, Badoo, an app to share photos and videos, Live.Me, a streaming video app that broadcasts users exact location, and even an app called Calculator%, one of many secret apps that is used to hide photos, videos and browser history.
“Eventually they are going to use it. So for me, I have a concern about the social media, especially about parents’ control,” said another parent, Gabriella Delcastillo.
GPD’s post said not to panic though. They said if you don’t know what an app is that your child has installed on their phone, then Google it. Do your research and then you can better deem what is and isn’t appropriate.
“We try everyday, still but we don’t know. They just grow up so fast,” said Nohemi Said, a parent.
“The future, we will see. It’s going to be complicated, especially for our little ones.”
