PlayStation‘s servers are down. If you tried to access the PSN (aka PlayStation Network) service this morning and couldn’t, don’t worry: it’s not your fault. The service is completely down. The problem started on Monday night (ET) and is still affecting millions of gamers around the world. Right now, the service is not working properly and many countries are being affected by the problems it is having.
Checking social media, it seems that it was from 21:00 Monday, ET, when the problems began. PlayStation has already confirmed that they are working on fixing the problem. In one of their most recent updates, they said: “You may experience difficulties logging in or creating an account to access PlayStation Network. We are trying to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.”
PSN servers fail all at once
It is unknown at what time it will be fixed, so it is possible that it could take from a few hours to several days. It is likely that the service will be up and running again within the next few hours, but it is impossible to determine when that will be. As far as the affected functionalities are concerned, all of them have been down for several hours.
If we visit the PSN network service status page, we can see that all sections of the PSN network are down. It is there, in fact, where Sony has said that they are working on fixing the account management, games and social networking services, PlayStation Video and PlayStation Store. Among the affected platforms they cite PS Vita, PS3, PS4, PS5 web and others, so it’s a widespread bug that affects virtually all of their devices.
Undoubtedly, it is quite a major problem, since we are talking about a generalised crash that is affecting all their systems. It’s been several hours since they started, so it doesn’t look like it’s any old crash, and the bug is of relative importance. Of course, this is purely speculative, as it is impossible to determine the severity and source of the bug until PlayStation itself issues an official statement.
What we do know is that it has come at a difficult time. After the PS5 Pro controversy, in which thousands of users criticised the company harshly for the price of its “new console”, another one broke out after the latest PlayStation 5 update added “advertising” to some of its menus. However, this was removed some time after Ask PlayStation explained on Twitter that it was a technical error and not an intentional change.
