Public art project to honor women’s history on iconic downtown bridge

DES MOINES, Iowa — One local artist is undertaking a public art project on the Iowa Women of Achievement Bridge honoring women’s history.

Laura Formanek is the creative director of the project “Walking with Women to Greatness.” She’s planning to use her background in video to create projected art and animations along the bridge.

She will project photographs, newspaper clippings, and inspiring text onto the pathway of the bridge. There will also be speakers along the bridge that’ll broadcast sound from oral interviews. The experience will start on either end of the bridge as there’s no particular order.

“I would find that out on walks on runs, I would go across the Women of Achievement Bridge and kind of rally myself up and pump myself up to keep going and if all these women can do amazing things then I can continue to do amazing things as well. And so, that was where the idea came from and then I wrapped it into a pitch that would focus on amazing women on the bridge itself,” said Formanek.

She is still in phase one of the project — planning, researching, and fundraising. She isn’t sure when the project will be completed, but in the meantime, people looking to help creatively or donate can reach out to her through the project’s website.

Formanek won a microgrant from the Des Moines Art Festival, which will go toward the cost of insurance. She is also in the process of applying for other grants to help get the project off the ground.
