A growing number of artists have been making good money from selling virtual items within Roblox. Now they could be selling physical merch too.
The company has launched a feature enabling players to “buy physical products directly within their favourite Roblox experiences and receive avatar items as part of the purchase”.
This is via some new commerce APIs with Shopify – used by plenty of artists – as the first partner. And there is already one VERY prominent musician using it.
“The Weeknd is also exploring commerce as part of his groundbreaking, playable world-building experience that is launching on Roblox tomorrow,” announced the company yesterday – meaning the experience goes live today (16 May).
Music Ally has found the link to this new Roblox experience. It’s called The Weeknd Hub, and is based on the artist’s new film ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’.
Fans are encouraged to “immerse yourself in scenes from the film, complete the Prologue and descend the subfloors prepared for battle” as well as listening to tracks from the movie. A ‘Grand Opening’ event is scheduled to start at midnight tonight, which offers more details on the experience.
“Be one of the first to explore The Weeknd Hub, shop official avatar accessories & emotes and grab your exclusive Hurry Up Tomorrow ticket bundle with a limited XO chain,” it explains – the chain being a virtual necklace for fans’ avatars.
It’s the work of XO Productions, which also made an existing Roblox experience based on The Weeknd’s ‘After Hours Til Dawn’ tour.
