On June 30, 2010, Mashable hosted the first Social Media Day to emphasise the importance of social media and its role in global communication. Andrew Weinreich founded SixDegrees, the first social networking site, which launched in 1997.
The website allowed users to name their friends and family connections, as well as access a variety of interesting features such as bulletin boards, school information, and profiles.
After it was shut down in 2001, people began communicating through sites such as Friendster, MySpace, and Facebook.
The medium’s prominence led to the creation of numerous additional sites that we use today, including Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Snapchat.
