Social media reaction to New College of Florida disposing of hundreds of books

Following the Herald-Tribune’s report Thursday on New College of Florida emptying the Gender and Diversity Center student library and removing books from its campus library, thousands of people reacted on social media, including notable public figures. The original post on X, formerly known as Twitter, had almost 3 million impressions since Thursday afternoon.

Christopher Rufo, a conservative activist and member of New College’s board of trustees, said the college was simply throwing out its trash.

Gov. Ron DeSantis spokespeople on New College emptying gender diversity library: “propaganda” and “great job!”

Bryan Griffin, Gov. Ron DeSantis’ communications director, and Jeremy Redfern, the governor’s press secretary, both posted about the story.

Democratic politicians on New College of Florida tossing books: “We won’t let them throw the truth away.”

Anna Eskamani, an Orlando Democratic representative in Florida’s Legislature, posted the story on her Instagram account and a statement to her X account.

Maxwell Frost, a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives, also retweeted the original post.

Stacey Abrams, a former Democratic gubernatorial candidate in Georgia, retweeted a post about the American Pride Rises network about the story.

More reaction to New College of Florida disposing of library books and gender diversity library

Jack Posobiec, senior editor at Human Events and conservative voice on X with 2.6 million followers, said that he “didn’t see any library books” in the photos from the story.

Jennifer Jenkins, a school board member from Brevard County, said throwing the books out was no different than burning them.
