PHOENIX (AZFamily) —President Biden’s shaky debate performance against former President Trump on Thursday night has led to widespread speculation that Biden should drop out of the Presidential Race and let another younger candidate like Vice President Kamala Harris or California Gov. Gavin Newsom take his place.
But is that even possible?
Republican Consultant Marcus Dell’Artino said concerns about Biden’s age are getting louder, leading to Democratic lawmakers in Arizona and nationwide having serious discussions about whether Biden should be replaced.
“I believe it’s realistic,” said Dell’Artino. “It is a true possibility, whether the President Joe Biden accepts that or not, is a whole different question. I think that’s a conversation for him and Jill to have.”
Biden is already the Democrats’ presumptive nominee and the overwhelming choice of primary voters, where he ran mostly unopposed.
He’s already won nearly all of the party’s delegates, which means it’s very unlikely he’d be forced out of the race.
Democratic Consultant Tony Cani thinks this is much ado about nothing, and there’s no way Biden will step down.
“I think its unrealistic,” said Cani. “I think Joe Biden is going to be the nominee, and we’re going to be choosing between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. When it comes down to it, I don’t think 90 minutes of debate will define his Presidency.”
There is some precedent for an incumbent President stepping down.
In 1968, Democrats selected Vice President Hubert Humphrey as their nominee. President Lyndon Johnson dropped out of the race because of his dwindling popularity stemming from the Vietnam War. Republican nominee and former VP Richard Nixon ended up winning that race.
During a campaign stop in North Carolina on Friday, the president gave no indication he is going anywhere.
“The President today gave a great speech where he said I am not as young as I used to be, I don’t talk and walk as well, but I know how to tell the truth and deliver for Americans, and that’s what voters will see,” said Cani.
