ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Social Workers play a vital role in society by interacting with the folks who are in need of specialized support and assistance.

Ohio University Zanesville Assistant Professor of Instruction for Social Work Dr. Leah Vensil detailed what their event titled ‘Day in the Life of a Social Worker’ was all about.

“It’s a time for social work students to meet our agencies in the community, the folks who make the magic happen,” Vensil said. “It’s a time for our students to look for internships or employment. The goal is to really connect the professionals with the students so that we can increase the workforce in our community but also ensure that we have folks who need social services, those needs are met.”

Many of the participating agencies offer services for people burdened by issues linked to poverty, assault and addiction.

“I think we have like 14 or 15 agencies and we would love to have more next year as space and tables allow,” Vensil said. “So we’ve got Allwell, MVHC, OCALA, Genesis, the Health Department is here, gosh I don’t want to leave anyone out but there’s a lot of folks here. I’m really grateful.”

The university holds similar events for many of the career fields to which they offer educational degrees and today’s event marks the second one they’ve offered for students and local employers in the social working occupation. Today’s event was a collaboration between Ohio University Zanesville and the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board.
