Spartanburg gallery, hotel celebrate Women’s History Month with female artists on display

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – It’s National Women’s History Month and at the AC Hotel in Spartanburg, two female artists are on display in the lobby for people to enjoy.

Aimee Wise is the Collections Manager with the Johnson Collection and shares with us what it is all about.

“Part of our mission at the Johnson Collection is to give recognition to artists who may have been underrepresented in their time, including women artists and artists of color in particular,” she said.

Ruth Asawa and Annie Albers both attended Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Albers focused on textiles and texture and one of her pieces hangs on the wall in the lobby at the AC Hotel.

“I mean in terms of textile awareness, whether it’s architectural or decorative or conceptual – her name. She’s like the godmother of textiles as far as I am concerned,” Wise said.

Ruth Asawa has a piece that hangs out of reach on the wall in the lobby and was put in place when the hotel was built in 2017, acting as the focal point for visitors to the property.

“The whole point of taking in her work is to see not only the work itself but the way that it interacts with light and space inside of a room,” Wise said. “So building the lobby around a piece like this and then having it be available as kind of like the star on our Christmas tree was very important to us in the planning stages.”

These two artists’ work and stories are available daily in the AC Hotel and the Johnson Collection as a whole is across the street. Wise is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the diverse collection of artists they showcase and in the gallery, the walls are always changing, giving each artist a special time to shine.

“Both of these artists, although they come from completely different backgrounds, managed to make artwork that not only was impactful at the time, but continues to be impactful today,” Wise said.
