Squarespace’s Latest Artistic Collab Is With Jeff Koons

The work of celebrated artist Jeff Koons has spread to the far corners of the world, including a recent sports-themed group show pegged to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris and solo exhibits in Italy, Qatar, and Greece.

But his inflatable sculptures and technicolor paintings have never been gathered in one place before, which had become a priority for the “Balloon Dog” creator, who reached out to Squarespace for logistical help with his digital footprint.

The alliance, launching on Wednesday with two documentary-style ads, centers on a revamped website that not only gives superfans a handy hub for four decades of Koons archives but also allows any user to copy the format.

“This type of democratization is really the basis of all art,” Koons says in the video called “Process.”

It was “serendipity” that brought the two together, according to David Lee, Squarespace’s chief creative officer, describing the fourth artist partnership—after Björk, Rick Rubin, and Magnum Photos—in the ongoing program called Squarespace Collection.

“It’s a familiar story to have someone as prolific as Jeff Koons, and the last thing he has to spend time on is his own website,” Lee told ADWEEK.

Not surprisingly, Koons had “a clear vision” of how he wanted to showcase his existing and future art, according to Lee, which includes famous pieces like “Michael Jackson and Bubbles,” “Puppy,” and “Rabbit,” to name a few. Squarespace provided a tech assist and other advice for the exclusive co-branded template.

Four decades of Jeff Koons artwork is now accessible on his revamped Squarespace website.

Admitting that art is “strange—it’s a mystery,” Koons said he wanted to build a site that would “communicate visually, emotionally, and intellectually the way I see the world. This custom website design called Reflect will give the user the same power and dynamism to create their own visual story.”
