STORYTELLING ORILLIA

In honour of the long-running International Women’s Day Art Show, which opened May 3 at the Orillia Museum of Art & History (OMAH), Storytelling Orillia is inviting artists to tell the stories behind their pieces at this month’s story circle.
All are welcome to join the circle on Sunday, May 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. on the main floor of Creative Nomad Studios, 23 Mississaga St. W., Orillia. Those who come may tell a brief story or listen for the backstories to be revealed.
Orillia artist Juliana Hawke, an art educator with OMAH for many years, is an organizer of the show and has been instrumental in growing the show over the years. She has also helped to organize this story circle with Storytelling Orillia, and will speak about her own piece in the show.
Running until July 26 at OMAH, the art show has the theme of Home.
Since its inception in 1997, this art show has inspired hundreds of women artists to participate in highly dynamic exhibitions, exploring a wide range of media and themes.
In celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8), the show’s goal is to encourage women to express themselves artistically in a themed group exhibit, which is not juried and therefore inclusive. The spirit of the exhibition is one of affirmation and co-operation.
The artists participating in this year’s show come from diverse backgrounds, are of all ages (teenage and up) and levels of artistic experience. Most of the artists live in the central Ontario region, although the show includes artists from across Canada.
A wide range of media is presented in this exhibit, including works in oil, acrylic and watercolour, as well as mixed media, drawing, photography, sculpture, ceramics, video, textile and fibre arts.
This year, 128 artists are sharing their art and stories, interpreting the theme Home.
