Summerween Market Blends Beer, Art And Spooks At Tinley Park Brewery

TINLEY PARK, IL — Lovers of Halloween and artisan markets have a chance to enjoy both in one place, with a specialty market coming soon to a Tinley Park brewery.

Streetz Artz Alliance is working with Soundgrowler Brewing again for the return of the Summerween Market, back for its second year. The 2024 version of this highly anticipated event is bigger and better than last year’s with new artists, new features and more tacos.

The Summerween Market will be held on Saturday, July 27, from 12 to 5 p.m. at Soundgrowler Brewing, 8201 183rd St Suite P, Tinley Park, IL. Over fifty artists will be set up in the parking lot and inside the brewery. Items offered for sale are all handcrafted, which is a requirement for most Streetz Artz Alliance shows. Halloween-themed items will be found at almost every artist booth either as original artwork, sellable items or elaborate decor.

Food items will include caramelized puffed corn, chocolate-covered marshmallows with googly eyes, hot sauce, boozy gummies, roasted nuts, pickled vegetables, giant cookies and treats for your dogs. Tarot card readings and take-home readings are available from Ten Cups Tarot, as well.

The event is curated and organized by John Streetz, head of the Streetz Artz Alliance and is one of the bigger events from the group. The Streetz Artz Alliance is a group of 350 artists and crafters from across the Chicago suburbs, NW Indiana, and southern Wisconsin who participate in markets at breweries all over the area. The group is dedicated to promoting local artists and fostering community engagement through art-centric events.

“We have a totally new mix of artists at this year’s Summerween,” said Streetz. “About 10 of the artists are brand new to the venue, and the lineup includes 25 artists new to this specific event.”

“Halloween is exactly what summer is missing,” said Zachary Geoffroy with Jeffries Books.

“My books deal in the dark, spooky, and witchy, and that’s a perfect vacation read for a lot of us weirdos! My Middle Grade novels are aimed at the age when boys fall off reading. It becomes a chore or homework that keeps them from sports, collecting, and gaming. So my books are brimming with action, lasers, and fart jokes to keep noses in books and trick kids into reading all summer.”

The brewery will set up a beer ordering station outside with the flagship beers in keg pours with a few can pours at well. The exact line-up of beers will be determined the day of the event. With the addition of the outdoor beer tent, it will be easier for patrons to secure a beverage faster than last year. Food available from the brewery will include tacos, burritos, tortas, nachos and elote.

The Summerween Market is not just about shopping, but also about discovering unique oddities and rare finds, Streetz said in a release. From bone jewelry and terrariums to mummified specimens and vampire accessories, there’s something to captivate every curious mind. Whether you’re seeking original comics, spooky stickers, or handcrafted woodwork like charcuterie boards and candleholders, the market promises an unforgettable experience.

“I’m thrilled to be back for Summerween,” said Jon Belonio, owner of Belonio Doodles. “It was so much fun last year, and I expect no difference this time around. The Tinley Park community shows up, and it seems these Soundgrowler markets get bigger and better every time.”

Art enthusiasts can take in an extensive collection of original art and prints, from detailed ink artwork to whimsical watercolor monsters, and even glow-in-the-dark framed art. For those with a penchant for unique and quirky decor, the market offers handmade recycled paper and typed poetry, layered cardstock shadowboxes, and resin creations including spirit boards, pendants, and skulls. Nature lovers can explore beautifully crafted crystal trees, dream catchers, and ethically sourced bone art, while plant enthusiasts will find kitschy planters, micro gardens, and 3D printed pots and vases.

“The artists have really stepped up their game this year with new creative, creepy designs and breathtaking artistry that infuses the normal with the macabre or that adds a diabolical twist to cutesy creatures,” Streetz said.

To animal lovers, know the brewery does not allow pets inside the brewery, unless they are service animals. Pets are allowed in the beer garden. Bosco’s All Natural will be on-site selling themed pet treats and various products safe for your pets.

The event is free to attend, rain or shine, all ages are welcome and patrons are invited to dress up as if it were Halloween. There is plenty of on-site and nearby parking available and several local cosplayers will be on site during the event.
