Taylor Swift named world’s biggest-selling artist in 2023

Taylor Swift has been named the biggest-selling global recording artist of 2023, according to an industry body.

The American superstar, who is 34 years old, has set another record by topping the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry’s (IFPI) global artist chart for the fourth time. The IFPI, which represents the recorded music industry worldwide, announced on Wednesday that Swift had won its 2023 global recording artist of the year award.

This award is calculated based on an artist’s or group’s worldwide sales across streaming, downloads and physical music formats during the calendar year, and it covers their entire body of work. Swift has previously topped the worldwide chart in 2014, 2019 and 2022, more than any other artist since the prize began 11 years ago, according to the IFPI.

Her albums from 2022, ‘Midnights’ and the re-releases ‘Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)’ and ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’, all reached the top of the UK charts last year. The Eras Tour, which started with Swift performing in Glendale, US, in March 2023 and is still ongoing, also led to a resurgence in her catalogue, says the IFPI.

Her song ‘Cruel Summer’ from 2019 was number one around the world last year, four years after its release. In the UK, it reached its peak at number two in 2023.

Lewis Morrison, who works at IFPI looking after charts and certifications, said that Taylor Swift “continues to redefine the limits of global success”. He also said: “Taylor is a singular talent and her commitment to her craft and her fans is truly phenomenal.”

Last year, she set a new Guinness World Record for the highest-earning music tour ever with The Eras Tour. It was the first tour to make more than one billion US dollars! She even turned her tour into a movie that was shown in cinemas all over the world. The film sold the most tickets in the UK and Ireland on its first day, according to Vue International.

In October, she released 1989 (Taylor’s Version) which had the biggest opening week for any album released this year. In 2024, Taylor made history at the Grammy awards by being the first person to win album of the year four times with Midnights.

K-Pop stars Seventeen and Stray Kids were also in the IFPI’s global chart, coming second and third. Canadian rapper Drake was fourth and Canadian singer The Weeknd was fifth.

Mr Morrison also said: “It is also fantastic to see so many artists entering the chart for the first time, and the return of established acts years after their last appearance.” He added: “As the global recorded music landscape shifts and new opportunities emerge, record companies continue their work to build global, long-term careers for their artists.”

US country singer Morgan Wallen made his debut on the IFPI Global Artist chart at number six, thanks to his successful 2023 album ‘One Thing At A Time’. K-Pop groups Tomorrow X Together and NewJeans also made their first appearance in the top 10, landing at number seven and eight respectively.

Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny was at number nine, while US singer Lana Del Rey secured the tenth spot, her highest position since 2014 when she was 17th on the chart.
