The entertainment industry often throws some unlikely people into the same rooms, resulting in some incredibly strange friendships. The internet went crazy when it was discovered that Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg consider each other close friends, for example, while many people can’t help but wonder what Eminem and his good friend Elton John actually talk about.
However, one of the most bizarre friendships to emerge from Hollywood involves Princess Leia and a certain British male singer whose music has plagued radio stations for far too long. No, I’m not talking about Ed Sheeran or Robbie Williams, but someone who makes music that is even worse (if that’s even possible). Believe it or not, Carrie Fisher was a good friend of James Blunt.
As the daughter of Singin’ in the Rain star Debbie Reynolds, Fisher’s emergence in Hollywood during the 1970s was inevitable, but she proved herself to be a talented actor with her role in Star Wars, which changed cinema forever. Appearing in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Fisher’s portrayal of Leia became one of the most iconic performances in Hollywood history, and she subsequently went on to appear in other acclaimed films like Hannah and Her Sisters and When Harry Met Sally.
In the early 2000s, however, the actor found herself in a London restaurant where an up-and-coming singer was also eating. Blunt was actually a British Army captain, but his real passion was songwriting, and he would often pen songs in his spare time, which eventually landed him a record deal. Thus, when he met Fisher, he decided to mention his burgeoning musical career, which worked in his favour better than he could’ve possibly imagined.
“She was an amazing woman, Carrie,” Blunt revealed on The Nightly Show. “I met her in London in a restaurant through mutual friends. She asked me what do you do? I said I’ve just left the army, I’ve got a record deal and I’m going to move to Los Angeles to record an album.”
Evidently, Fisher was a very generous woman, because she instantly offered him an opportunity he simply couldn’t refuse. “She said, well then you’re going to need a place to stay – come and live with me. Literally like that. And I lived in her house, recording three of those albums and whenever I’ve been in Los Angeles that’s my home.”
As a result, Blunt recorded one of his biggest hits, ‘Goodbye My Lover’, in her house. You wouldn’t expect the song to have been recorded in the Star Wars alumni’s residence, but clearly anything is possible. “I recorded ‘Goodbye My Lover’ in her bathroom, because everyone has a piano in Hollywood. Just a really remarkable person, and she went out with a bang as General Leia back in Star Wars,” he said.
The song became a hit, appearing on his debut album Back to Bedlam and hitting number nine on the UK Singles Chart. It remains a popular track – one that can often be heard at funerals – but few know that it was recorded just a few inches away from Carrie Fisher’s toilet.
