The best social network comes at a price

The ills of social media are many and varied, and they are well cataloged. No need to recall all of them here: we know that sites like Facebook and Twitter/X are bad for our mental health, harm the social fabric and spread falsehoods composed by bad actors. Many have started to compare using social media to smoking cigarettes, and predict a social, legal and financial reckoning in the coming years. Just recently, the surgeon general suggested that social media needed a warning label akin to tobacco products, letting users know about the dangers these platforms present for our wellbeing.

Still, the problem remains: we connect with each other through the internet and we enjoy engaging with each other. Photos are fun. Memes are funny. I want to keep in touch with my friends in California. I want my grandparents to keep up with my children even though they live three states away. The question is: how do we connect in a way that preserves our social and personal wellbeing?
