The Celebration of the Arts is back in Midland for the 41st year

MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) – If you’re looking for a way to escape the heat this weekend, the Arts Council of Midland is holding a colorful and creative event at the Bush Convention Center.

May 16 to May 18, is the 41st annual Celebration of the Arts and the theme is Art Pop, Art Happens

“I love it. It’s a wonderful show. Midland’s a great place. I always come back, I love coming back here,” said Donny Spencer, the Owner of Donny Spencer Art.

This year’s theme is inspired by the pop art artists of the 60’s, most notably, Andy Warhol.

At this year’s event, over 50 artists will be present showcasing and selling their art.

“We have artists that are working in almost every medium. Paintings, drawings, photographs. We have sculpture, ceramics, jewelry and all kinds of different types of printmaking,” Danny Holeva, the Executive Director of the Arts Council Of Midland said.

All artists in the show are vetted and competed to be a part of this show.

“Well this is all my pencil artwork. It’s all done in graphite pencil. I base it out of nature, so most of it is based with things I’ve seen or taken photographs of,” said Spencer.

“We have all sorts of jewelry and home goods that they have made, handmade in northern Uganda. We do paper beads, which are like these, we also do glass beads,” Holly Williamson, the Owner of the Bead Project said.

The Art Council of Midland says art is an important part of every community

“I think it enriches our lives. It helps us to use recognizable things but in a creative way. It makes people think. It brings your community together. It does it for a positive reason,” said Holeva.

“It builds community. Something that people can share. They can appreciate the artwork here and it brings them together on this common ground and it builds connection with each other,” Spencer said.

“I think art is such a creative piece of humans and mankind. It’s fun and lovely to be able to see what people are able to create,” said Williamson.

This event also allows you the chance to support small businesses from the area and beyond.

The event will also include live music, live art demonstrations, a family block party and new this year, a classic car show.

This year’s event kicks off Friday night with a Premiere Party starting at 7.

Tickets are available at the door for $80 and includes food, silent auctions and first pick of all the art.

Free admission to the festival starts Saturday at 10 a.m., and continues Sunday at noon.

“It’s a free fun experience and there’s food and hopefully lots of laughter and enjoyment,” Holeva said.

“You want to see some amazing skill and amazing talent come down here and see the artwork,” said Spencer.
