Chennai: Social media craze snuffed out one more young life, when a 19-year-old who was trying to film an Instagram reel with his friends, drowned in a pathway to carry treated hot water from Ennore Thermal Power Station (ETPS) at Ennore on Thursday.
The victim was identified as M Kiranraj of Ennore. He had just completed his course at an ITI. He and friends usually explored different places on the city outskirts and uploaded reels on social networking sites.
On Thursday, accompanied by seven of his friends, Kiranraj was shooting reels at the beach near Ennore Kuppam.
Since some of the fishermen began to chase them away, they ran towards the pathway to cross the stretch where they also shot a few pictures and reels.
This pathway is slushy with lack of maintenance and the locals knew the danger involved, police said.
Noticing the group of youths filming there, a man from the locality warned them to stay away as many got stuck in it.Realising the danger ahead, seven of Kiranraj’s friends managed to come out and reached their bikes.
Only after reaching Ennore Expressway, did they realise that Kiranraj was missing. When they went back to the area, they found him dead inside the slushy part of the pathway.
The group then informed the Ennore police, who recovered the body and sent it to Govt Stanley Hospital for a postmortem.
Police suspect the youth got stuck in the slushy part while running inside and drowned. A case of accidental death has been registered and an inquiry is on.
The residents in the locality have urged the police to place a few warning boards to caution visitors about the danger and to prevent such accidents.
Police said such accidents have become common in the locality with youths either filming reels on the main road, where many container trucks pass by, or on beaches. The local fishermen usually chased away the youths who risk their lives shooting reels in giant waves, police said..
