Viral furniture artist’s local business

OAKLAND, Maine (WABI) – A furniture design store in Oakland has just under 4 million cumulative followers across various social media platforms.

“Furniture is my canvas, some people do it on canvas, I do it on furniture, because why not,” said owner Katarina ‘Kacha’ Hernandez.

She began turning furniture into art in 2017, after her mother passed away, searching for an outlet. Then she began videoing, posting and selling her repurposed pieces.

“We did one video and the video just took off, and we were looking at the numbers we’re like ‘Oh my god, this is taking off, people are actually…it’s going viral,” added Kacha.

One of the favorite parts of the job for Kacha, who was born and raised in Serbia, is the amount of people she can reach weekly with her videos.

“That’s very important for me that my videos help people all over the world get out of bad days or depression as well like how I started and that’s what motivates me the most, to keep going, to keep painting,” she commented.

Kacha Furniture has been at the Oakland location on Church Street for a little over a year but essentially all of its sales comes from its online presence. The space includes a showroom, a space for workshops and of course the studio to film videos.

“For years we were filming out of our basement and that was the toughest thing ever,” she recalled.

Despite having followers across the world, Kacha doesn’t get a lot of local visitors.

“We would definitely love to have more local people knowing what we’re doing, lots of them have no idea what’s happening here, they stop by, some of them are curious to stop by to see what is happening, and they usually love, once they walk in, they love,” Kacha concluded.

On top of the videos and the selling of the pieces, Kacha Furniture just recently announced their own line of paint which will be for sale. Kacha Furniture also holds workshops.
