WATCH: Social media video seems to show coach thrust hips on player’s face

HOOVER, Ala. (WBRC) – Effective immediately, new Hoover High School football coaches Drew Gilmer and Adam Helms are on administrative leave.

The news was confirmed by WBRC in a release from Hoover City Schools sent on Tuesday afternoon. No reason was disclosed.

A video circulating on social media at the same time appears to show a coach during a recent practice running toward a player during a drill, grabbing the same player’s facemask and ripping off his helmet. Then, the player is seen falling.

In a second video that is also circulating right now on social media, a coach appears to thrust his hips in the face of a Buc’s player, as another coach pulled off the player’s helmet.

The school system has not released a statement regarding the videos and has not said that the videos are linked to the coaches’ being placed on leave. According to the release from the school, the decision to put the coaches on administrative leave “was made to ensure a thorough and impartial review of recent developments.”

The release also quoted Hoover schools Superintendent Kevin Maddox: “The safety and well-being of our students and staff are our top priorities. We are taking this matter seriously and working diligently to resolve it promptly and fairly.”

The release also states parents, students, and staff “will be informed of any significant developments as the investigation progresses.”

Gilmer was hired to be Hoover’s new football coach in January, following a highly successful career at Clay-Chalkville. Adam Helms was hired as the defensive coordinator, following Gilmer from Clay-Chalkville.

We have contacted Coach Gilmer for a statement or interview and will update this story when there are new developments.

The Hoover program is nationally recognized and was the focus of a 2006 reality TV series on MTV. The show, Two-A-Days, only aired for two seasons.
