(WBNG) — In the first month of the 2024 to 2025 school year, Broome, Tompkins and Chemung county districts reported threats of violence on social media.
Captain Benjamin Harting of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office said all threats are taken seriously.
Harting also stressed that a majority of the threats have been false or misleading, but advised that people who see or hear a threat should report it to law enforcement.
“We encourage people, if you do hear something, not to hesitate to get in touch with your school district or after-hours emergency,” Harting said. “Please contact law enforcement but please try to limit how much information you’re putting on social media that may not be accurate.”
Harting said discipline can be issued for people who make threats. he said the age of the perpetrator and the severity of the threat can determine how that person is disciplined.
