NINE female artists at different points in their careers converge in a powerful group exhibition championing women in visual arts.
In celebration of Women’s Month, emerging, established, and veteran female artists lend their talents and voices in the latest installment of Conrad Manila Gallery C’s Of Art and Wine Series, titled Breaking the Glass Canvas.
According to Lara Latosa, who co-curated the show with Nes Jardin, the exhibit “encapsulates the spirit of empowerment” as it shares stories of resilience and triumph of women.
“[The exhibition] stands as a testament to the power of women in the art world,” said Latosa, who’s also part of the show as a participating artist. “With a diverse range of styles, techniques, and perspectives, these talented artists inspire the future generation to dream big and dismantle the glass ceiling, or, in this case, the invisible glass canvas.”
Latosa presents in the show her signature depiction of waves, reflecting her affinity with nature as an environmental advocate. The San Pedro, Laguna native dedicates her pieces to herself as a woman, her sister, and mother, while sharing advice to those navigating male-dominated industries.
“Build a foundation based on passion first,” Latosa said. “In pursuing art or any endeavor, genuine passion becomes your unwavering source of motivation. With passion as your guide, neither money nor fame will hinder the joy you find in your craft.”
Part of the fold as well is respected female artist Lydia Velasco. Renowned for her evocative pieces that celebrate the femininity of the Filipina, the octogenarian has seen it all in her 30 years in the art scene, and more in her past life as an accomplished advertising practitioner.
“Even from the start, nilalaban [ko] na ang karapatan ng pagkababae,” Velasco said. For Breaking the Glass Canvas, Velasco presents four works dated 2023, featuring her inimitable portrayal of the Filipina replete with native elements.
Rounding out the star-studded, all-female showcase are Meneline Wong MD, Addie Cukingan, Anita del Rosario, Celeste Lecaroz, Flor Baradi, Helena, and Irish Galon.
“As we showcase the unparalleled talent of these visionary female artists,” according to Conrad Manila General Manager Fabio Berto, “we reaffirm [our] commitment to fostering diversity and inclusivity within the realm of art and culture.”
Of Art and Wine: Breaking the Glass Canvas is on view at Gallery C in Conrad Manila, Pasay City.
