Sudbury artist Monique Legault has made it to the 2024 Canadian Art Battle Championship, but she needs your help to advance in the competition.
The event takes place July 25 in Toronto. You can register online here to vote for Legault as your favourite competitor.
“This prestigious event will feature top painters from across Canada, each vying for the coveted title of the 2024 Art Battle Canada Champion,” said the event’s website.
“As brushes stroke across canvases, competitors will transform blank surfaces into breathtaking art in a series of timed rounds, where creativity and skill blend under pressure.”
Legault said she won the first local art battle championship back in 2018, and also made it to nationals that year, where she came in second place to Alberta champ, Dimitri Sirenko.
Despite a personal health crisis — she had brain surgery for an aneurysm earlier in 2024 — Legault recently won the Northern Ontario art battle championship, and is headed to the nationals again.
“I want this so badly, to prove to myself I am truly on the other side of the year I’ve had, but I also just want to bring this trophy back home,” said Legault, in an email to Sudbury.com. “Put Sudbury on the art battle map, and make my town proud!
“To do this though I need support from my people. They can go to ArtBattle.com, find the Canadian championships and register to vote. They will be prompted when the event starts to vote or bid to win the piece they love. This can ensure I at least get to the final round, and maybe win the whole thing, so I need support to get further.”
Audience participation in terms of voting is key to making the national art battle a success, organizers said in a news release.
“The atmosphere at the Canadian Art Battle Championship is always one of excitement and inspiration. Audience members play a crucial role, casting their votes to determine which artist moves forward in each round, and ultimately, who will claim the championship title. It’s not just about the competition; it’s a celebration of artistic talent and a gathering of the Canadian art community,” the release states.
“Prepare for a night filled with artistic flair, where you can watch art come to life right before your eyes. Whether you’re an art aficionado, a casual observer, or looking for a unique night out, this event promises something for everyone!”
