A partnership between two theatre groups is allowing only fortunate artist to further their education.
Off the Wall Stratford Artists Alliance has teamed up with Theatre Aezir in London to provide a $1,000 educational bursary. Michele Boniface, board co-chair with Off the Wall (OTW), says the local organization offers theatre production training to students ages 16 and up, in a studio at Factory 163 in Stratford.
“For the second year in a row, Off the Wall is partnering with Theatre Aezir, a professional theatre in London, to enable a young theatre artist to further their education and experience in backstage production,” Boniface said.
For 21 seasons, OTW has hired seasonal backstage artists from the Stratford Festival to pass along their considerable knowledge, skills and passion for live theatre to the next generation of artists. The bursary is to help cover a week-long workshop and expenses, such as meals or accommodation. Workshops available are Costume Design, Set Design, Makeup Intensive, Scenic Painting and Scenic Art Drops.
“Elizabeth Durand took Off the Wall’s Set Design workshop twice, and it was her experience in our studio that inspired this generous bursary,” Boniface said.
Last year’s recipient, Shams Al-Haddad, is now enrolled full time in Theatre Production at Metropolitan University. The bursary presents real opportunity for artists wanting to extend their learning possibilities.
“This is a fabulous opportunity for a local student interested in theatre to learn more about work behind the scenes from a seasoned professional artist,” Boniface said.
The bursary is for any youth aged 16-30. The deadline for submissions is May 15 with the winner announced on May 31.
