Young musicians shine at Maine Academy of Modern Music’s Girls Rock Concert

Student bands performed songs by female artists during a lively, inclusive event at Bayside Bowl in Portland.

PORTLAND, Maine — The energy was high and the guitars were louder than usual at Bayside Bowl on Saturday as the Maine Academy of Modern Music hosted its annual Girls Rock Concert. The event featured student-led bands performing songs that celebrated the contributions of women in music.

The concert, part of the Academy’s broader mission to empower young musicians, spotlighted female artists and gave students a platform to showcase their talent. One of the standout performers was Ellery Price, a vocalist with a band formed through the academy. Her group played a cover of “The Perfect Pair” by Beabadoobee, adding their own style to the dreamy indie-pop track.

“I think it’s a really great opportunity for kids that love music and want to be able to perform with people,” Ellery shared. “I just love singing. I play guitar and piano too, but I love to sing.”

While the concert celebrated women in music, organizers made it clear that inclusivity was just as important. All student bands were welcome to perform—including boy bands—so long as they chose a song written or performed by a female artist.

The Girls Rock event isn’t a one-time opportunity either. Organizers are already preparing for the upcoming Girls Rock Summer Camp, where all kids can continue to learn, collaborate, and perform in a welcoming space.
