Fort Collins and Hughes Stadium land: Then, now and what’s ahead
The Fort Collins land known best today as the site of the former Hughes Stadium has a long legacy and a future that has yet to be decided.
The Northern Colorado Intertribal Powwow Association is bringing its annual Spring Contest Powwow and Indian Art Market back to Fort Collins next month.
The event — NCIPA’s biggest — invites the public to experience Native American culture through authentic Native American food, arts, music, singing, social and intertribal dancing, according to a news release.
The 31st Annual Spring Contest Powwow and Indian Market will be held April 11-13 at Fort Collins’ Northside Aztlan Community Center, 112 E. Willow St.
Admission is $6 for a day or $15 for a weekend pass for people 13 years old and older, and $3 a day or $7 for a weekend pass for children ages 6-12, according to the NCIPA website. Children five years old and younger can attend for free.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own folding chairs.
The event’s tentative schedule includes a ground blessing at 4:30 p.m. April 11 followed by a gourd dance at 5 p.m. and intertribal dancing starting at 7 p.m. Dancing will start at 11 a.m. on April 12 and 13.
Native American foods — including Indian tacos, fry bread, beef stew and Frito pie ― will be served starting at approximately 5 p.m. April 11 and 11 a.m. April 12 and 13, according to the event’s website.
Its art market will open for business starting 5 p.m. April 11 and 10 a.m. April 12 and 13.
